Did you know: The sunset light helps the body heal

Sunset light, when the sunlight turns red, is when the damage caused by ultraviolet radiation is repaired by increased melatonin levels coming from near-infrared radiation from red light.

Benefits that we get from being outside whole day.

When the sun starts to rise in the morning, and the first thing that comes through is a large amount of near infrared radiation, but not the ultraviolet radiation. And so what’s happening in our bodies is that the near infrared radiation is stimulating the mitochondria to produce melatonin and it’s storing melatonin that it’s going to need later. Melatonin production happens earlier then we fall asleep easier at night.

–> Go outside as soon as you wake up and get some sunlight in your eyes (without glasses) in 3 minutes. Get those photons into your retina. Let the light tell your body ‘it’s time to get up and get preparation for the day, it’s time to start the metabolic pathways for the day’.

And then what happens is that as we move towards 10am to 2pm, that’s when we get the most UV radiation, because we’ve stored up a lot of antioxidants in the form of melatonin from the morning. So we can process the highly ionizing photons from the UV radiation. The UV light that’s responsible for making vitamin D can only really get into our bodies when the sun is really high in the sky and it’s directly overhead. However, it is best to avoid sunburn.

And then, as the sun starts to set in the west, any damage that might have been caused by the UV radiation will be repaired by the increased melatonin that comes from the near infrared radiation.

Because the effects of sunlight exposure are both beneficial and harmful, it is important to understand the appropriate level and timing of sunlight exposure for healthy living in the sun.
